About Cowgirls and Cowboys in the West
Cowgirls and Cowboys in the West was started by Phyllis Nickum to introduce international, and domestic travelers to the exciting experiences of the American West. I highly recommend her horseback riding experience as its truly authentic right down to the Quarter Horses she uses for rides. There is no “follow the leader” on these rides. Riders fan out posse style as they cut through the rich old west history of her 1,000 acres ranch that affords one-of-a-kind views of Palo Duro Canyon. If you are into meeting real-life Texans who love their heritage and flavors of America’s western culture, this is the place for you.

What an awesome experience!
Massive thanks to Phyllis, Darcy and Sierra for the awesome experience riding to the Palo Duro Canyon. Coming from New Zealand, we don’t get to see sights like this at home and it was a great way to experience a little bit of Texas by horseback. Having not ridden a horse for about 20 years as well as having young children in our group the horses were very well behaved for us amateurs! Darcy and Sierra were were very knowledgeable and it was great to hear a bit about the history of the area. Thanks again!

We took our 4 sons ages 16, 15, 11, and 10 on the 2 hour ride. It was fantastic. Horses were so sweet. We felt an instant connection with each of our horses. Marie and Darcy were great, calm, informative guides. Would definitely recommend this while in Amarillo!
GiNelle T (Allen, Texas)Fantastic experience
Much thanks to Darcy and Katie for their knowledge, patience and professionalism! I had never been on a horse, and they were most helpful in making sure I was comfortable and safe! This ride was outstanding – I was so impressed! We learned so much about the area and they were able to share their knowledge of the history! The views were simply amazing – thank you ladies!
lgm1228 (Modesto, California)Amazing, a must do
We went out for a day of riding and who knew it would be so beautiful. Not only were the horses really cool and chill but the staff was very accommodating. The knowlegable staff took my family which included a 7 year old and 5 year old around the rim of the canyon as they shared history of the canyon with us. Definitely a must do. I was impressed with how Sierra took my 5 year old son that didn’t want to ride without his mom and talked him into getting on the horse with her. Then she she entertained him the whole way. He was really happy with her. Darcy was knowledgeable as well as Sierra about the land and history of the ranch. Love love love it.
